Bernadette Kastendieck, a lifelong resident of Grants, New Mexico, went home to her Heavenly Father on March 10, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on September 17, 1942, in Grants, she spent her entire life in the community she loved, leaving an indelible mark through her warmth, style, and boundless generosity.
After graduating from high school, Bernadette began her career with the Cibola County Schools, where she not only dedicated herself to her work for 40 years, but also met the love of her life, Dwight Kastendieck. The two were married on June 28, 1974, beginning a beautiful partnership that spanned 51 cherished years. Together, they created a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for their sons, Kurt and Derek.
Bernadette’s life was a radiant testimony to her profound and steadfast faith in God, a faith that sustained her through every season of joy and suffering. Known for her impeccable sense of fashion and "glam", Bernadette was always turning heads with her elegant style and radiant presence. Yet her true beauty shone brightest in her generous spirit; she was always ready to lend a helping hand, offer kind words, or brighten someone's day. Above all, her greatest joy came from her family. She adored her husband, sons, daughters-in-law, and especially her four grandchildren, who brought endless light and happiness to her life.
Bernadette is survived by her devoted husband, Dwight Kastendieck; her sons, Dr. Kurt Kastendieck and his wife Rey, and Derek Kastendieck and his wife Sarah; and her beloved grandchildren, Holly Kastendieck, Luke (Bianca) Kastendieck, Julie Kastendieck, and Mayzi Alvarez. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tomas and Rosita Garcia, and sister, Angela Sanchez.
A celebration of Bernadette's life will be held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, 402 E High St, Grants, NM. The Rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will immediately follow at Grants Memorial Park Cemetery.
Bernadette's legacy of love, glamour and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May she now dance in the heavens with her Savior, surrounded by the angels, her parents, and sister Angela.
