Billy Paul Thompson, a beloved rancher and proud cow hauler, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2025, in Grants, New Mexico, a place that held many cherished memories for him. Born on December 21, 1946, in Lufkin, Texas, Billy's journey through life was marked by adventure, hard work, and an unwavering passion for the land and livestock he loved so dearly.
Billy was a man who found profound joy in the simple yet fulfilling life of ranching. His days were often spent hauling cattle across states, a task he approached with a sense of pride that was reflected in every interaction he had with fellow ranchers and the land itself. His iconic presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Billy is survived by his loving wife, Gwen Thompson, who provided unwavering support and companionship throughout their life together in Grants, NM. Their bond was a testament to enduring love, standing strong through the highs and lows of life. He was a doting father to his children—Brenda Sivils and Randy of Valley Mills, TX; Sandra Thompson of Crawford, TX; Lisa Todaro and James of Robinson, TX; Billy Paul Thompson Jr and Gary Jenkins of Richardson, TX; September Baca Thompson of Grants, NM; Joel McMinn and Leslie of Carlsbad, NM; Garrett Thompson and Randi of Marble Falls, TX; Jordan Thompson of Carlsbad, NM; and Justin Baca of Phoenix, AZ. Each of them carries forward his legacy in their own unique ways, reflecting the values he instilled in them through his years of hard work and dedication to family.
The warmth of his spirit also embraced his siblings, including Loretta Faye Henderson of Longview, TX, and Willie Pearl Abel of Bellmead, TX, both of whom share fond memories of their lifelong connection with Billy. His family extends further to include 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who will forever hold their grandpa close in their hearts. Additionally, Billy had many nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews, who brought joy and pride to his life.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman Ross Thompson Sr. and Ellen Pauline Shipman Thompson, and his siblings—Sherman Ross Thompson Jr., Nickie Dwight Thompson, William Ross Thompson, and Wanda Dee Thompson. Their memories will forever be intertwined with Billy’s own, as he carried their love with him and honored them throughout his life.
A memorial service to celebrate Billy's life will be held on September 28, 2025, at The Way, Truth & Life Ministries in Grants, NM. This gathering will be an opportunity for family and friends to come together, share stories, and reflect on the indelible mark Billy left on their lives.
