Carl Eugene Russell, 74, of Grants, New Mexico, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February14, 2026. Carl moved with his family to Grants during the uranium mining boom, and from that moment on, this community became his lifelong home.
Carl was a man shaped by hard work, loyalty, and strength. He faced life with a toughness that those around him deeply admired. He had a special love for Harley Davidson motorcycles, and the freedom of the open road reflected the independent spirit he carried throughout his life.
Those who knew Carl will remember not just his strength, but his unforgettable personality. He had a way of filling a room without saying much, and he was known for his sharp wit and playful sense of humor. Carl loved to joke around and was always ready with a prank, nothing mean-spirited, just the kind that made people laugh and shake their heads. His humor was part of his charm, and it left a mark on everyone lucky enough to know him.
He was preceded in death by his father Robert "Bob" Russell, mother Katherine "Kibby" Russell, sister Debbie Coberly, brother Bill Russell, daughters Robin Gallegos and Kimberly Yates, son Ira Yates, and his beloved wife Charlotte Russell, with whom he shared many years of companionship and devotion.
He is survived by his daughter Dona Roberts and husband Cecil. His grandson Roby Roberts and wife Margie and great grandchildren Rhiley and Roby Roberts. Grandson's Chris and Alex Roberts, Tyler Yates and Drew Esquibel. He also leaves behind his beloved dog Yogi, along with many nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren.
Carl's presence, his humor, and his big heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him
A Celebration of Life will be held this Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 1:00pm, at the American Legion Post 60 in Milan, NM, to honor Carl's memory. Family and friends are invited to come together, share stories, and have a beer in his honor, just the way he would've wanted.
