Catarino Hernandez, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away on February 23, 2026, in Milan, New Mexico. Born on April 30, 1943, in Cerritos, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, he lived a life filled with hard work, faith, and love for his family. Catarino's journey was marked by resilience and dedication, traits that defined both his career and personal life.
Throughout his varied career, Catarino worked diligently as a field worker, uranium miner, and small business owner, before becoming an integral part of the produce department at Wal-Mart. His resourcefulness and strong work ethic were evident in everything he did. Although he may not have had a traditional education, Catarino was a fast learner, proving to be a smart and capable man who thrived in various roles throughout his life. His dedication to his family shows in the wonderful hard work and craftsmanship he put into building his home, standing strong like the man he was, for his children and grandchildren to enjoy for years to come.
Catarino was a man of deep faith and cherished his relationship with God. His love for the Bible was palpable, and he took great joy in sharing its teachings with those around him. An avid church goer, he found solace and strength within his faith community. He loved discussing the scriptures and inspiring others with his remarkable love for God and Jesus.
Family was everything to Catarino. He relished every moment spent with his loved ones, embodying the true spirit of togetherness and compassion. His relationships with his children—Cathy (Roxann) and Rick (Dianne)—were filled with shared experiences and laughter. He took immense pride in his grandchildren—Tonito (Elisa), Matt (Hailey) and their new baby Ace Ryan Hernandez, Kendall (Christian), Isabelle (Sergio), Brenda (Armando), Elias, Francisco, and Esperanzah—who brought joy and meaning to his life.
Catarino shared a special bond with his brother Miguel Hernandez, and he treasured the many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Each connection he made was cherished, as his fondness for everyone he met radiated warmth and kindness.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Berlinda Hernandez, who was his lifelong companion and confidante. He also mourned the loss of his son, Ernest Hernandez, as well as his parents, Juanita Ortiz and Tomas Hernandez, and his brother, Sotero Hernandez.
Catarino's light will forever shine in the hearts of those he loved, and his memory will be held dear. The impact he made on the lives of his family and friends will resonate for generations to come.
A viewing will be held at St. Vivian Catholic Church in Milan, NM, on March 2, 2026, from 9 am to 9:30 am, followed by a Rosary at 9:30 am. A Mass will take place on March 2, 2026, at 10 am, with burial services to follow at Grants Memorial Park Cemetery at 11 am.
