Obituary

Daniel M. Bland, a distinguished artist, passionate educator, and devoted family man, passed away on May 31, 2026. Born on February 1, 1950, in Spokane, Washington, Daniel lived a life marked by creativity, exploration, and an enduring love for the natural world.

Throughout his career, Daniel earned great respect as a painter and printmaker, contributing significantly to the arts both through his own work and his dedication to teaching. He nurtured the talents and curiosity of countless students as a middle school art teacher at Los Alamitos Middle School and later as an Art History Professor at New Mexico State University in Grants, New Mexico. His academic journey reflected his deep commitment to the arts, having earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alaska, a Master’s Degree in Painting and Printmaking from New Mexico Highlands University, and an Art Education Degree from the University of New Mexico.

Daniel was not only an accomplished artist but also an avid adventurer and lover of the outdoors. Those privileged to know him recall joyful times spent on hiking and camping trips with his family and close friends, where he reveled in the beauty of nature’s landscapes. His hobbies extended to playing guitar, cross-country skiing, and mountain bike riding, pursuits that enriched his vibrant and active life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Bland, and his children Rebecca Kitts, Jennifer Kitts (Johnny Maestas), and Daniel Kitts. Daniel took immense pride and joy in his grandchildren, Dominik, Johnny Jr., Matthew, and Aaron. He was also cherished by his sister Laurel (Jerry) Eisinger, step-mother Barb Bland, and nephews Scott and Chris.

Daniel was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Dr. Laurel L. Bland and T/Sgt. Curtis A. Bland, whose legacy he carried forward with honor.

A memorial service to celebrate Daniel’s life will be held on June 18, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Mt. Taylor Funerals & Cremations, located at 120 3rd Street, Grants, New Mexico. There will be a reception following the service, that will be held At the Elks Lodge located at 805 Charles Street, Grants, New Mexico.

Daniel M. Bland’s indelible impact as an artist, educator, and adventurer leaves a lasting impression on all who were fortunate to know him. His spirit of creativity and exploration will continue to inspire both his family and the wider community for many years to come. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
