Doris Goforth

Services will be held at the Presbyterian Church, 400 Nimitz Dr., Grants NM at 12:00pm (Noon) on July 15, 2015. Graveside services at the Grants Memorial Park will follow.



Doris Hawkins Schadel Goforth, 85, passed away on July 9, 2015 in Albuquerque, NM. Doris was born on October 8, 1929 in Dill City, Oklahoma but came to Grants as a child when her family migrated here and she lived most of her life in the Grants area.



She is preceded in death by her daughter: Nancy McCoy, husband: Gus Goforth, parents: Dorothy Hawkins and Harlan Hawkins, sister: Dolores Webb and former husband: John Schadel.



Doris is survived by her sister: Edith Elkins of Prewitt, NM; brother: Leon Hawkins of Grants, NM; grandson: Daniel McCoy of Grants, NM; one great-grandaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.



As a child, Doris began her schooling in a one room school house in El Morro, NM. Later on her family moved to Grants during the school year then stayed at the sawmill sites, where her father worked, during the summers. Doris attended school at Grants Union High School and graduated with the class of 1947. Doris was always one of the top students in her class and enjoyed being a majorette with the band and a cheerleader with the pep squad. After high school, she married John Schadel and had one wonderful daughter, Nancy. Doris was very active in the community; being a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 63 years, a longtime PEO member including serving as PEO state president and was active in politics, once running for local office. Doris was a real estate broker and had her own real estate business for many years. She was also employed by various businesses in town as a bookkeeper. She married Gus Goforth on January 13, 1995 and they shared a happy life until his passing in 2003. Doris spent the last phase of her life in the company of her sister, Edith.



Pallbearers will be: Nolen Webb, Tommy Elkins, Daniel McCoy, Ronnie Elkins, Robert Webb, Jody Elkins, Larry Hawkins and Emeric Blair.



Honorary pallbearer: Danny Elkins.
