Frank Chavez, Jr., of Cubero, NM, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully on August 27, 2026. He was born in Cubero, NM on June 27, 1943 to Frank and Flora Chavez,
Frank is survived by his daughters, Cindi Vecere Stevick (Chris) of Phoenix, AZ, Jeanenne Bustos, Valerie Bustos (Anthony), both of Grants, Shawnee Tischler (Kyle) of Breckenridge, TX, and Shawna Reatherford (Chris) of Trent, TX. He is survived by 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren with a 4th on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Florinda Brito of Grants and his brother, Eugene Chavez (Rita) of Cubero, and his sister-in-law, Lorraine Chavez of Cubero, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Flora Chavez, his sisters Feliz Sarracino, Velma Anderson, and his brothers Adelino Chavez and Joe M. Chavez, as well as his granddaughter, Mandy Bustos Martinez and his sons-in-law, Bernie Bustos, Jr., and Bruce Canfield.
Frank was a hard worker, a rancher, a roper, and an all-around cowboy. It was second nature to him to rope a calf, fix a fence, brand, and herd cattle. He worked hard and he played hard – rodeo was his happy place.
After graduation, Frank worked at Anaconda for many years. He was also a welder. He enjoyed raising cattle and working around his home. He was active, always finding something that needed to get done.
A funeral will be held to honor Frank on Friday, September 4, 2026. Rosary will be at 9:30am with Mass following at 10:00 at Our Lady of Light Church in Cubero, NM. Interment will follow at Cubero Cemetery. A reception will then take place at the hall at Our Lady of Light Church.
