Fred Jesus Valdez, 80 of San Rafael, New Mexico, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, and friend to all who knew him, Fred left us exactly as he lived: on his own terms, full of quiet strength, and perhaps with a small, knowing smile or his famous peace sign.

Fred was a true San Rafael native, born on December 13, 1944, to Elfego and Juana Maria Valdez. Growing up, he quickly learned the values of hard work and perseverance that would define him throughout his remarkable life.

After high school, Fred’s deep sense of duty led him to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army as a combat veteran in Vietnam. He served with honor and incredible valor, carrying a quiet strength and humility that became his hallmark. His military experience instilled a profound compassion that made him a constant, reliable pillar in his family and community—the person everyone knew they could count on.

After his service, Fred returned home and worked hard as a uranium miner. More importantly, he met and married the absolute love of his life, Tita. Together, they built a home filled with love and laughter, raising their children and navigating life’s ups and downs as a united front.

Fred, also known as Chuy, had an incredible gift for making everyone feel welcomed and loved. He never met a stranger, just a friend he hadn't shared a story or a joke with yet. His humor was as dry as a New Mexico summer and his heart was as big as the landscape he loved. He had that rare ability to lighten the mood with a perfectly timed quip or a twinkle in his eye.

Of all his joys, nothing compared to spending time with his family. Fred deeply loved hunting and simply "driving the mountains" with his sons, grandsons, and friends—a cherished tradition he inherited from his own father and passed down with pride. He also enjoyed life’s simpler pleasures: trying his luck at the local casinos, savoring a good steak and lobster dinner, and settling in for his favorite TV shows (Westerns, Blue Bloods, Yellowstone and yes, he was hooked on Survivor).

Throughout his journey, Fred’s faith in God and his unwavering love for Tita and his family were his guiding light. He faced hardship—especially his illness and the deep sorrow of losing Tita—with unmatched grace and unbreakable resilience. He didn't just endure; he inspired those around him to keep going with courage and compassion every single day.

Fred’s legacy lives on in his devoted children: Freddie and his wife Nakomi, Corley, Frankie and his wife Bernadette, his daughter Tracie, son Michael, adopted son Adam and adopted daughter Frankee.

He absolutely cherished his role as "Grandpa" to Joshua, Terry, Julian, Elijah, Christopher, Joseph, and Gabe. He was also blessed with many great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his dear sister, Mary Jane Robles, and a wide circle of special nieces, nephews, and friends who felt like family.

Fred is reunited in peace with his beloved wife, Tita Salazar Valdez; his precious grandson, Bryan Valdez; his parents, Elfego and Juana Maria; his brothers, Bernie, Roman, Robert, Elfego Jr., and Tacho; and his sisters, Aurelia and Mollie.

A faithful member of the San Rafael Catholic Church, Fred lived a life guided by faith, generosity, and an unwavering support system for his loved ones. May he rest in eternal peace, free from all suffering, his spirit soaring over the mountains he so adored.
