Gary Slater, a dedicated and compassionate individual known for his commitment to caregiving and community service, passed away on March 8, 2026, in Grants, New Mexico. Born on April 5, 1952, in Denver, Colorado, Gary's life journey was marked by a profound dedication to helping others, particularly those with disabilities.
Gary’s early years were spent in Denver until his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and later to Grants, New Mexico, where he completed his senior high school year. Grants and Las Cruces became the places he proudly called home. Throughout his life, Gary’s educational path laid the foundation for a career distinguished by hard work and empathy.
His professional life was diverse and impactful. Gary worked at Home Stake and uranium mines before embracing roles that reflected his caring nature, including serving as a caregiver for Bethagy Home Care and at Dona Ana Schools. His dedication to supporting the disabled was a cornerstone of his career and personal mission, exemplifying a kindness that touched many.
Beyond his professional commitments, Gary engaged in a multitude of hobbies and interests, which he pursued with joy and enthusiasm. He loved to cook and bake, finding pleasure in the artistry of food preparation. His evenings often included playing board games and cards, activities he cherished as a means of connection and relaxation. An avid traveler and nature enthusiast, Gary enjoyed hiking, embracing the outdoors with a laid-back, mellow demeanor that made him a beloved companion.
Gary was remembered by those closest to him as a kindhearted soul whose personality was characterized by warmth and a calm, gentle spirit. His ability to remain composed and easygoing under all circumstances was a defining trait that endeared him to family and friends alike.
He is survived by his children Tammy Slater, Dustin "Dusty" Slater and Christopher Slater and his wife Michelle Slater; sister Debra Knowles; and stepson Chris Stern. Gary also leaves behind cherished grandchildren Jessilyn Martinez, Triston Slater, Sam Slater, and Andrew Corona, along with his extended Trujillo family. His beloved canine companions, Ebony and Buffy, were faithful members of his household and remain fondly remembered.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Twila Slater; brother David Slater; and former wives Jane Slater and Elaine Trujillo.
The legacy of Gary Slater endures through the lives he touched, the kindness he extended without hesitation, and his unwavering commitment to service and family. His memory will be honored by all who knew him for his gentle spirit and dedicated heart.
