Funeral Service for James Ray Cooper 86 of Milan, New Mexico will be held on Friday-September 2, 2016-1:30 PM at Compassion Mortuary. Burial will follow at the Grants Memorial Park.



Viewing will be held on Friday-September 2, 2016 for 9:00 AM till 1:00 PM at Compassion Mortuary.



James Ray Cooper beloved Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother and Uncle to many, left this earth to be with Jesus on Saturday, August 27, 2016. James was born in Dougherty, Texas, on May 14, 1930, to Virgil and Vesta Cooper, and was the oldest of 7 brothers and sisters. He served in the US Navy in the 1940's and married his wife, Norma, in 1949. They moved to Milan, New Mexico in 1955, and returned again in 1967. Together they raised 4 children. James spent the majority of his career as a driller and a hauler, mining for uranium and coal, and retiring in 2000 at the age of 70. James loved spending time reading the local paper and being outside; working in his garden growing fresh fruit and vegetables, tinkering around in his tool shed, fixing things around the house, and fishing.



James is survived by his Loving Wife: Norma Casey Cooper of Milan, New Mexico; Son: Jay Cooper and wife Melanie of Belleville, Michigan; Daughters: Sharon Thomas and husband Clay of Keller, Texas, Shirley Stout of Keller, Texas; Brothers: Clavin Cooper of Groton, CT, Chester Cooper of Lynndale, Texas and Melvin Cooper of Milan, New Mexico; Sisters: Martha Jo Shacklett of Lynndale, Texas and Norma Faye Stoneman of Spur, Texas; 11 Grandchildren and 28 Great Grandchildren.



He is preceded in death by his Son: Arthur Ray Cooper; Parents: Virgil Cooper and Vesta Ray Cooper.



Pallbearers will be: Mel Cooper, Mark Cooper, Eric Stout, Christopher Stout, Jesse Young, Jeremy Young.



Honorary Pallbearer will be: Justin Young.
