Joe Ray Leyba, born March 3, 1951, in Tinaja, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, in Grants, New Mexico. He was a man deeply connected to the land and the people he loved, leaving behind a legacy marked by dedication, craftsmanship, and a passion for life’s simplest pleasures.
Joe’s life journey was defined by his diverse career, which saw him excel both as a chef and a drilling rig operator. Known for his remarkable culinary skills, Joe delighted family and friends with his cooking, a talent that reflected his generous spirit and attention to detail. His commitment to hard work was unwavering, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, embodying a genuine kindness that endeared him to all who knew him.
A self-described mountain man, Joe found joy in the outdoors. He treasured long drives to the mountains, where he indulged in carpentry, woodwork, rock work, and landscaping. Whether camping or fishing, Joe was in his element surrounded by nature’s beauty. He delighted in seeking out antler horns in the mountains and enjoyed sharing these adventures with loved ones. His love of westerns, football, and wrestling added a vibrant thread to the fabric of his family’s shared experiences.
Joe’s proudest accomplishment was the time spent with his beloved wife, Evelyn Leyba, to whom he was married for 46 years until her passing. Their partnership was a cornerstone of his life, underscoring a deep bond of love and mutual respect.
He is survived by his children, Jolene (Rodney) Gonzales and Louise (Joey) Franco, who carry forward his legacy with pride and fond remembrance. Joe also leaves behind a cherished circle of siblings: Velma Ortiz, Albert Leyba, Mary Leyba, Valentine Leyba, and Sadie Leyba. His love extended warmly to his grandchildren—Mariah Olguin (Gio), Shane Gonzales (Lauren), Jamason Leyba (Sawsha), Jacob Leyba, Regina (Pamela), Aviana Leyba, Reuben Zaragoza, Alyssa Zaragoza (J.P.), and Isabel Sosa (Juan)—and great-grandchildren Kinsley, Jamason Jr., Amalle, Aviana, Jaysion, Joel, Mia, Christopher, Angela, Luca, Ella, Alianna, Joshua, Geovonni, with one more on the way.
Joe’s family also remembers with heartfelt sorrow those who preceded him: his sons Cirilio Paul Leyba and Joe Ray Jr. Leyba; his parents, Florenio and Maria Leyba; grandparents Andres and Manuelita Gurule; sister Millie Sandoval; and grandsons Xavier Leyba and Everett Leyba.
Throughout his life, Joe Ray Leyba remained a true embodiment of strength, resilience, and love. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him—a man who built not only structures and landscapes but also enduring bonds of family and friendship. He will be profoundly missed, yet forever cherished.
A special thank you to the incredible nurses & staff at Grants Wellness & Rehab. Thank you for your dedication, love and care you all provided for my dad during these last 2 1/2 years. Also, Cibola General Hospital ER for always taking care of Grandpa Joe.
