With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of John Larry Russell on December 19, 2025, at the age of 78. John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and good friend whose life was defined by service, adventure, and deep devotion to family.
Born on March 25, 1947, John developed an early passion for both learning and exploration. He graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute and Eastern New Mexico University before proudly serving his country as a UH-1 Huey helicopter pilot in the United States Army. His courage, skill, and unwavering commitment earned him the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him.
Following his military service, John pursued various careers and adventures, spending much of his life in his hometown of Grants, New Mexico. No matter where life took him, his greatest joy was always found in the company of family and friends.
John was a proud father to his three sons - Ken (Esperanza), Creigh (Susan), and Jarid (Sandra) - and he treasured the families they brought into his life. He was also loving grandfather and great-grandfather to Emilii (Rob and Robert, Roric, and Ella), Camerie (John), Janie, Scott (Adrian and Jack), Breanna, Aryssa, Antonio (Evelia), and Isaac (Consuelo and Amora), as well as extended family members Sandra and Scarlett. Sharing adventures, laughter, and hard-earned wisdom with those he loved most was one of his greatest pleasures.
An avid golfer, John carried his passion for the game throughout his life. He proudly achieved four hole-in-ones and competed in senior golf tournaments across New Mexico. His time on the course brought him great joy, and his golfing companions will fondly remember his competitive spirit, infectious enthusiasm, and good-natured teasing.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Utha Jane (Sanders) Russell, his lifelong partner and best friend. He is also survived by his brother, Charles "Chuck" Russell (Katherine, Stephen), and his sister, Suzanne Query (Gail and Savanna), along with many extended family members, classmates, co-workers, fellow golfers, and friends who will remember him for his generosity, humor, and kindness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Leon Russell and Charlene Russell, whose love and guidance helped shape the man he became.
A funeral service will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John's memory to The Fisher House (donations@fisherhouse.org), an organization dedicated to providing care and comfort to military families.
John will be deeply missed and forever remembered. May he rest in peace, knowing he lives on in the hearts of all who loved him.
