Joseph Andrew Smalley Jr, a beloved father, husband, brother, and friend, passed away on December 13, 2025,in his home in Grants, New Mexico Surrounded by his family. Born on April 4, 1961, in Gallup, New Mexico, he was a man of many talents and unwavering dedication, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew him.
Joe's journey in life began with his education at Gallup High School, from which he graduated in the class of 1979. He then bravely enlisted in the United States Navy in 1978, a decision made without parental permission, reflecting his tenacious spirit. Joseph often humorously remarked about enlisting that “it was better to ask for forgiveness than permission” a testament to his character He served honorably as a Petty Officer Third Class, IC3 Interior Communications Specialist, aboard the USS Wabash and White Plains until he received an honorable discharge in 1984. Afterwards he moved back to New Mexico and while working at the power plant there he met his wife Michelle through a friend. He asked her to marry him 3 times before telling her “ Fine, next time you ask” they were married shortly after.
Throughout his career, Joseph made significant contributions to the community. He worked at the Tristate Power Plant and went into business alongside his brother owning and operating the Fruitland Trading Post, but it was as the founder of Smalley Electric that he truly thrived, leaving a legacy of mentorship that he cherished deeply.
Family meant everything to Joe.. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Smalley; his daughters, Kenna Bullock and Misty Ashbaugh, along with their respective husbands, Jason and Kyle. His grandchildren: Alana’ Jo, Isabel,Russell, Garrett, and Amelia. His great grandson Stanley, as well as his his mother, Lynda Groves, and brother, Michael Smalley.
Joe’s family mourns the loss of their patriarch, who was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Andrew Smalley Sr. and his brothers, Leon and Steve Smalley. His legacy of love and laughter will remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
Throughout his life, Joseph enjoyed the simple pleasures: He loved his home and the New Mexico mountains — the Zunis, Taylor, and Gila — where he knew the terrain intimately. Hunting trips with his father, uncles, brothers, and son-in-laws formed cherished memories that would last a lifetime. When he wasn’t working you could expect to find him golfing with his buddies or making people laugh over a cold beer.
A memorial service to honor Joseph Smalley will be held on January 10, 2026, at the Elks located at 805 Charles St, Grants, NM starting at 10:00 AM with a celebration of life to immediately follow. All are welcome to gather and celebrate the life of this remarkable man.
