Nila Bermudez, a cherished homemaker, devoted wife, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, in Grants, New Mexico, at the age of 93. Born on December 1, 1932, in Pecos, New Mexico, Nila led a life filled with love, faith, and joy, touching the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Throughout her life, Nila was a steadfast presence in her family's lives. She was known for her unwavering faith and constant prayers, embodying a spirit of compassion and kindness that will be deeply missed. Nila took great pride in being a nurturing mother and doting grandmother, creating countless memories through family reunions and holiday celebrations. Her love for her grandchildren was boundless, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
In her leisure time, Nila enjoyed a variety of pastimes, including sewing, cooking, camping, fishing, and playing Bingo—a favorite activity that brought her joy and entertained her spirit. Her warmth and sincerity radiated during gatherings with family and friends.
Nila is survived by her daughters: Lorraine Saavedra (Alfred), Millie McCarty (Malcom), Mary Ann Bermudez, Henrietta Zamarron, and Tanya Bermudez; her sisters: Jessie Segura, Rose Romero, Carmen Rougemont, Lillian Armijo (Cleofas); her sister-in-law: Erlinda Rougemont; and her special niece: Christine Hawkins.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Henry Bermudez; her beloved grandson, Marvin Henry Bermudez Dunlap; her mother, Anita Lopez Rougemont; her father, Cleofas Rougemont; her sisters: Nancy Chavez (Sammy), Geraldine Porter (Charlie), and Irene Varela (Virgil); and her brothers: Cleofas Rougemont Jr. (Della) and Cipriano Rougemont.
Nila's family will honor her life with a series of services starting with a viewing on February 4, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Mt. Taylor Funerals & Cremations / Compassion Mortuary in Grants, NM. A Rosary will be held on February 5, 2026, at 9:30 AM, followed by a Mass at 10:00 AM, both at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. Interment will take place at Grants Memorial Park Cemetery at 11:00 AM that same day.
Pallbearers will include Lawrence Sarracino, Keith Dunlap, Darrin Dunlap, Aaron Pacheco, Andrew Romero, Angelo Chavez, and Josiah Griego. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Nila's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Nila Bermudez leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, faith, and community. She will forever be remembered in the hearts of her family and friends as a guiding light whose spirit will continue to inspire those she left behind.
