Obituary

Steve D. Mitchell didn’t just pass through this world, he left boot prints, engine grease, and some legendary stories in his wake. Born on May 7, 1962, in Winslow, Arizona, and later making his home in Grants, New Mexico, Steve embodied the rare combination of unyielding strength and a zest for life that marked him as one of a kind.

For 38 years, he served as a signal maintainer with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad; always, proudly, a Santa Fe man. In an industry built on precision and resilience, Steve was the steady hand that kept the lines clear and the trains moving, no matter what the elements or the miles threw at him. He approached his work the same way he approached everything: with quiet competence and an iron will.

Steve’s true passions lay where the pavement ended and the wild began. An avid hunter, accomplished hot rod enthusiast, and collector of fine firearms, he lived for the outdoors and the satisfaction of tinkering with anything mechanical. His 390 Boone & Crockett bull elk and a memorable caribou hunt were more than trophies, they were testaments to a man who measured himself against nature and came out stronger every time. Whether winning Best of Show at Laughlin, riding rallies with friends, or repairing small engines in the garage, Steve attacked life with purpose and joy. He had an engineer's mind, a woodsman’s heart, and the kind of character that made him a friend to everyone who crossed his path.

Those who knew him best will tell you: you never met a stronger man, physically or mentally. Steve’s strength wasn’t loud; it was reliable, unflinching, and rooted in deep loyalty to his family and friends. He is survived by his devoted wife Marla Mitchell, son Jered Mitchell, grandchildren Douglas and Audrey Mitchell, and sister Deborah Lakin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene D. and Kathleen Mitchell.

In a world that often moves too fast and too carelessly, Steve stood as a reminder of what it means to live deliberately: to work hard, love deeply, explore widely, and face every challenge with grit and good humor. His absence leaves a gap that won’t soon be filled, but his example endures; for his family, his friends, and anyone fortunate enough to have shared a stretch of road or trail with him.

A celebration of life will take place at the Knights of Columbus in Grants, NM, on July 25th from 5:00 to 10:00 pm. Stories, laughter, and memories of a life well-lived are warmly invited. In lieu of flowers, take a moment in the outdoors, turn a wrench on something that needs fixing, or simply live a little bolder; exactly as Steve did.

He came, he conquered a few mountains (and quite a few engines), and he left the world better for having roared through it. Rest well, Steve. Your work here is done.
